Let’s talk about some of our amazing Al-Anon pamphlets!
I love that Al-Anon is available for anyone whose life has been affected by
someone else’s drinking. We all know that Tradition 3 states that “The only
requirement for membership is that there be a problem of alcoholism in a relative
or friend.”
Alcoholism affects people from all different walks of life and all different
backgrounds. That’s why we have such a great selection of pamphlets to appeal
to many different people who are affected by this family disease.
Al-Anon Family Groups Welcome …African Americans …African Canadians …All
People of Color (S-68)
Al-Anon’s Path to Recovery AlAnon Family Groups Welcome Native
Americans/Aboriginals (S-67)
Does She Drink Too Much? From Men, about the Women in Their Lives (P-62)
To Parents of Alcoholics (P-16)
Hope and Understanding for Parents and Grandparents (P-94)
I know that my family has been deeply affected by this family disease and I want
everyone from my family, and yours, to be able to identify with this program
when they decide to check out Al-Anon. I originally found the program when a
professional gave me a copy of the twenty questions called Did You Grow Up with
a Problem Drinker? (S-25)
As I was reading through the questions, I immediately identified and it led me to
checking out this amazing program of recovery. I am grateful that someone gave
that pamphlet to the professional that I spoke with. I am in recovery today as a
direct result of that action!
We are fortunate that we have other 20 question pamphlets available. Troubled
by Someone’s Drinking? (S-17), as well as Has Your Life Been
Affected by Someone Else’s Drinking? Alateen is for You! (S-20)
My most favourite and well-worn, tried-and-true pamphlet is the Detachment (S-
19) pamphlet. It never lets me down. I read and re-read it, no matter how long I
am practicing this program of recovery! I need to hear the message in this
pamphlet regularly and I especially need to read and hear the “In Al-Anon we
Learn:” section.
We have many pamphlets available to use for Public Outreach in both hard copy
and in digital format. I am grateful that I have choices about how I can participate
at the group or district level in Public Outreach, in that I can either help to
distribute paper copies of pamphlets or send out digital pamphlets to
organizations within my community.
This is a good reminder to go back to my new group and ask them how they might
want to use some of our amazing pamphlets to participate in public outreach
within our community. Something to add to our next business meeting agenda!
I wish you another 24 hours of peace and serenity!

Why purchase your literature from our Ontario South LDC?
Members on the World Service Office (WSO) ‘Literature Thought Force’ highly encourages Areas to have their own LDC and that the members purchase from their LDC rather than WSO.
When ordering from the LDC, shipping time is 2-4 business days. WSO shipping time for literature is 4-6 weeks.
Our CAL has something for everyone. General literature for Al-Anon and Alateen. This Includes daily readers, books on our legacies (Steps/Traditions/Concepts), workbooks, adult children, for parents and grandparents, partners and spouses. We have service material and public outreach including items for the professional.
An easy way to keep a bit of our program close at hand are our bookmarks and cards. Everything is available for viewing on our new electronic order form. Have a glance for the things you feel you need or want.
Our LDC manager is available by phone or email for questions and clarification.
About Conference Approved Literature
One of the questions asked here often is ….”Is this book conference approved?” followed by the book name, author etc.
All Al-Anon CAL bears the above seal along with the words:
‘Approved by World Service Conference Al-Anon Family Groups’. This seal and statement give the assurance that the literature is produced by Al-Anon and is consistent with the Twelve Steps, Twelve Traditions, and Twelve Concepts of Al-Anon Family Groups.
Some other ways to know if a book is conference approved is that on the spine there is the Al-Anon logo above the book code. As these works are collaborative there are never author names on the books.
While we may find many of the things we need to grow in literature that isn’t conference approved, our service manual on page 63 and 64 state that “only Al-Anon/Alateen materials be used in our meetings. This ensures that our program message stays consistent with our principles.”
Over the years we have had the privilege to see the traditions in action with this very phenomenon. Members were bringing along their books and in the pile was an AA book, or a publication they bought elsewhere. Kindly and quietly a member asked if they could please take those books and tuck them out of sight. We would then discuss it at the business meeting or even better put on the agenda the topic ‘Why CAL?’ so that those who did not come to the Business Meeting were also included. It was interesting to hear members share why they felt those other publications needed to stay out of sight.
Even more enlightening in one of those meetings was the sharing of a newcomer, who said they looked at the books people brought along and mentally took note. so they could get them. We may at a personal level share with others what helped us, but the use or mention of this non-Al-Anon literature in our meetings does conflict with our service manual and our traditions, particularity 3 and 4.
We want our program to be here and healthy for everyone. The new person who walks in the door (or right now signs into an electronic meeting) and for those who have been here for many 24 hours.
